Electric VS Manual Toothbrushes

Do you NEED an electric toothbrush?

I have received several questions about this because it’s a good question! Electric vs manual toothbrushes!

electric vs manual toothbrushes. Is there a difference?

Manufacturers are pushing electric toothbrushes stating their superiority. Are they really better than a manual toothbrush or is this just another marketing scheme?

DO DENTISTS RECOMMEND ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSHES FOR BRUSHING?

It is recommended to brush at least twice a day for 2 minutes. You can choose to do so with a manual or electric toothbrush. If following the recommended hygiene instructions and diet but struggling with cavities, build-up, or gum irritation, I suggest trying an electric toothbrush.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH?

At a minimum of two times.

In the morning: to decrease the oral bacterial growth that occurs when we sleep and reduce bad breath.

Before bed: to eliminate bacteria food sources from residual food left behind after eating and plaque accumulation.

It usually is not emphasized what type of toothbrush (electric vs manual) because this is patient specific. For quite some time, I was unable to use an electric toothbrush because I absolutely hated the vibration! So, I understand that it’s not for everyone.

ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH BENEFITS- why are electric toothbrushes 'better'?

  • Electric toothbrushes require less physical manipulation to clean teeth because it does most of the work.
  • The toothbrush head is usually smaller to access difficult-to-reach areas.
  • A built-in timer that will keep you on track for the recommended brushing time (2 minutes feel a lot longer when you’re just brushing!).

TO WHOM DENTISTS RECOMMEND USING AN ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH?

  • Anyone really, but it’s advocated more for those who lack the dexterity or have difficulty using their hands from issues such as carpal tunnel.
  • Children because they have difficulty assessing time and may not have the attention span or understanding of how to clean their teeth.
  • Adults who lack the attention span or willpower to brush for a full two minutes.
  • Still have plaque build-up regardless of brushing efficiently with a manual toothbrush.

CAN I GET THE SAME RESULTS WITH A MANUAL TOOTHBRUSH?

Absolutely! Yes, you can if used properly!
  • Use your manual toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums.
  • Using circular motion clean all surfaces of the teeth.
  • Use a timer or look at a clock (if you have a clock in your bathroom) to ensure a two-minute brushing routine.
  • Do an after-brushing check to ensure that all plaque build-up is removed

WHAT CAN I DO IF I DON'T WANT TO USE AN ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH?

  • Use your manual toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums.

  • Using circular motion clean all surfaces of the teeth.

  • Use a timer or look at a clock (if you have a clock in your bathroom) to ensure a two-minute brushing routine.
